It's often the worst way of 'refreshing' old games. That's the problem with "reimaginings" / remakes rather than people's "memories" though. Too many people with too many different memories of the game. If they stay too close to the original, one faction is disappointed for them not being bold or creative enough, if they change too much, purists are pissed.
